Nightlife

Copenhagen is a very late-night city where jazz clubs, nightclubs, dance halls, discos and taverns proliferate. We especially like the live jazz (local and from around the world) at the Copenhagen Jazzhouse. For a good glass of wine (and cozy atmosphere), try Hviids Vinstue—it's in the city's oldest wine cellar. The new, trendy nightclubs are Vega, NASA and Rust.

BARS, TAVERNS AND PUBS
House of Souls—An international bar-cafe, with lively evenings and a varied clientele. There's a cajun restaurant upstairs. Tuesday-Sunday 7 pm-4 am. Vestergade 3. Phone 3391-1181.
Hviids Vinstue—Located in the historic city center, this is Copenhagen's oldest wine cellar. Sunday-Thursday 10 am-1 am, Friday and Saturday 10 am-2 am. Kongens Nytorv 19. Phone 3315-1064.
Stereobar—A very stylish bar, furnished with Danish-designer furniture. The mood is relaxed and sober on the top floor, noisy and funky in the basement. Wednesday-Saturday 8 pm-3 am. Linnegade 16. Phone 3313-6113.

DANCE CLUBS/NIGHTCLUBS
NASA—The ultimate VIP club for the rich and famous. It's designed with sofas and loudspeakers shaped like clouds, and everything is white. Normally for members and celebrities only, but you can get in if you call ahead to reserve or if you arrive at 12:30 am, when admission is 100 DKr. Friday and Saturday 11 pm-6 am. Gothersgade 8F. Phone 4056-9101 before 11 pm; 3393-7416 after 11 pm.
Pan Cafe and Disco—The biggest gay cafe-bar-nightclub is also popular at night with the hetero crowd. Occasionally they publish a gay magazine. The cafe is open Wednesday-Saturday 8 pm-5 am; the nightclub is open Thursday-Saturday from 11 pm and costs 50 DKr. Knabrostraede 3. Phone 3311-3784.
Woodstock—As the name implies, Woodstock plays lots of '60s favorites for a dance-loving crowd. Thursday 9 pm-5 am, Friday and Saturday 10 pm-5 am. Vestergade 12. Phone 3311-2071.

LIVE MUSIC
Bartof Cafe—A very relaxed, local cafe with a good music selection: blues, folk and rock. Monday-Thursday noon-1 am, Friday 11 am-4 am, Saturday noon-4 am, Sunday 11 am-midnight. Nordre Fasanvej 46, Frederiksberg. Phone 3186-9067.
Copenhagen Jazzhouse—The Copenhagen jazz institution. They book the biggest Scandinavian and international artists throughout the year. Bar and disco Thursday-Saturday until 5 am. Concerts almost daily at 8:30 pm, Friday and Saturday at 9:30 pm. Entry to the nightclub costs 50 DKr; concert tickets start at 70 DKr. Niels Hemmingsensgade 10. Phone 3315-2600.
La Fontaine—A late-night favorite, with jazz, blues and bebop every night at 11 pm. It's the only nightspot in Copenhagen that's open all night, every night. Nightly 8 pm-5 am. Cover charge varies. Kompagnistraede 11. Phone 3311-6098.
Mojo—Specializes in blues, with a concert every night of the week. Open nightly from 8 pm. Longangstraede 21C. Phone 3311-6453.
Momo's—Offers live Latin, Caribbean and African music several times a week. Open nightly 5 pm-2 am. Music usually starts at 9 pm. Griffenfeldtsgade 20. Phone 3535-8000.
Rust—This club was recently redesigned with a slick new look. Music is usually the latest, often electronic or trip-hop. Wednesday-Saturday 10 pm-5 am. 50 DKr for the nightclub; concert prices vary. Guldbergsgade 8, Norrebro. Phone 3524-5200.
VegaM—The new "House of Music" is the best venue for all the latest trends, from rock and world music to trip-hop and pop. The nightclub, Lille Vega, is open Friday and Saturday 11 pm-5 am. 50 DKr cover after 1 am. Enghavevej 40, Vesterbro. Phone 3325-7011.
