Transportation

Travel by bus and train

In the Greater Copenhagen area you can transfer freely between buses and trains using the same tickets and discount cards. You just have to travel within the period and zones they are valid for. The Greater Copenhagen area is divided into 95 zones. Coloured zone maps have been posted at stations and bus stops. The red zone is the zone you are in and forms the basis of the calculation of the fare. The fare depends on the number of coloured zones (zone rings) you travel through. The most expensive colour zone determines the fare whether your journey ends here or you just pass through the zone. Please see the coloured zone map for zone 1 overleaf. Tickets and cards are valid on all trains. However, on certain trains (for instance InterCity and international trains) you pay a seat reservation fee/surcharge. If you wish to travel in first-class or other non-standard accommodation, you pay a special surcharge. If you have any questions, you may use the service telephones at most stations, or ask staff at stations or bus driver.

Tickets and discount cards

Ordinary basic tickets can be purchased from vending machines at stations, ticket offices and on buses from driver (not cards though). The tickets are stamped with time, date and departure zone. You pay for the number of zones you need, but the minimum fare is for 2 zones and the maximum for 7 (all) zones.
Discount cards are available for 10 journeys within two, three, four, five, six or all zones. It is cheaper per journey to use a discount card than to buy a ticket.
Before your journey starts, you punch the card in a yellow card-clipping machine on a bus, at a station or on a private railway train. Each clip entitles the passenger to travel within the number of zones indicated on the face of the card. By clipping the card more times you can travel in a greater number of zones than one clip allows. The text on the discount card explains how many times you need to clip. If a group of people travel together, the card must be clipped the full number of times required for each person.
Discount clip cards for two, three or more zones are available from manned stations and HT ticket offices, vending machines at stations and Føtex, Irma, Super-Brugsen, LokalBrugsen, Dagli’Brugsen, Obs!, HG-Daglig, Nærum Stormarked, Strandberg, Herlev Lavpris, PRIMA, GOBI, HH, GOVA, Spar, Favør and Kvickly supermarkets and Shell tank stations. You must keep tickets and discount cards throughout the journey and present them to ticket inspectors on request.

Validity of tickets and discount cards:
2 - 3 zones 1 hour
4 - 6 zones 1 1/2 hours
All zones 2 hours

Children:
Children under the age of seven travel free when accompanied by an adult. Children aged 7 to 15 years (both inclusive) can either purchase a children’s ticket or a children’s discount card for two or three zones. Two children under the age of 16 years can travel on one adult ticket or one clip on an adult discount card. On buses you can only buy children’s discount cards for two zones.
24-hour ticket:
The 24-hour ticket offers you 24 hours of unlimited travel by bus and train throughout all the zones of the Greater Copenhagen area. The ticket should be clipped in the yellow card-clipping machine on a bus, at a station or on a private railway train. One adult can bring along two children under the age of seven years free. The 24-hour ticket is available from HT ticket offices and manned stations.
